According to Wikipedia, ByteDance created TikTok as a global version of Douyin. TikTok was launched in the international market in September 2017. On 9 November 2017, ByteDance spent nearly $1 billion to purchase Musical.ly, a startup headquartered in Shanghai with an overseas office in Santa Monica, California. Musical.ly was a social media video platform that allowed users to create short lip-sync and comedy videos, initially released in August 2014. TikTok merged with Musical.ly on 2 August 2018 with existing accounts and data consolidated into one app, keeping the title TikTok.

Was this my first time using the platform? 

This was definitely not the first time I’ve used TikTok, I’ve been using TikTok for some years now. For me, TikTok caught my attention during COVID times when everywhere was closed and we had to be in quarantine, with curfews, etc. It became one of my most used apps on my phone, it was like my way of coping and distracting myself from everything that was going on around the world due to COVID-19.


Did I like the platform used? 

I really do like TikTok, whenever I have some free time during the day I usually scroll through TikTok. A lot of times before I go to sleep I’ll scroll through TikTok as well. I’ve realised, for me, TikTok can be very addictive. Whenever I go on TikTok and look at videos, I find it difficult to exit the app.

Was it easy to use?

What do I think are some of the best ways to use the platform?

You can use TikTok to gain recognition and followers which can lead to you becoming an

influencer. It can also lead to you being hired by companies both locally and internationally

to promote your business. 

In addition, If you’re an entrepreneur you can also use TikTok to advertise your

products/services and conduct your business. 

Also, you can use the app just for entertainment like doing dance videos, cooking,

shopping hauls, skincare routines, fashion, participating in TikTok challenges,

comedy/drama, etc.


What makes the platform different from other platforms?

Compared to other social media platforms TikTok focuses more on entertainment such as singing, dancing, skits, and so much more creative videos. TikTok used to only allow short-form video content with a maximum duration of 60 seconds ( 1 minute) but that has been updated over the years.

TikTok has become a very popular app, it has over 1 billion active monthly users worldwide. This makes it a great platform for marketing/advertising purposes. Business owners can try to get their employees to participate in trends and challenges to build that connection with their audience and gain more recognition. They can also use this platform to advertise their products/services and partner with popular social media influencers to promote their business.
